Mike Murley

SAXOPHONE-TENOR

Saxophone – Soprano

Saxophonist/composer Mike Murley is one of Canada’s most celebrated jazz artists.  He has played on fourteen Juno Award-winning recordings since 1990, seven as a leader or co-leader, seven as a sideman.  His most recent Junos include The North (2018), Metalwood’s Twenty (2017) and his trio’s Test of Time (2013).

Murley moved to Toronto from his native Nova Scotia in 1981 and has enjoyed a career that has spanned a wide stylistic spectrum.  Recordings with legendary Canadian artists such as Ed Bickert, Rob McConnell, and Guido Basso showcase the saxophonist’s talents in the mainstream standard repertoire.  On the more contemporary side, Murley has collaborated frequently with younger generations of improviser/composers including pianist David Braid and guitarist David Occhipinti.  He is also well known for his work with the three-time Juno Award winning electric jazz group Metalwood. In addition, he has recorded and performed with numerous international artists including David Liebman, Renee Rosnes, John Schofield, Norma Winstone, as well as the late Paul Bley, John Abercrombie, and Kenny Wheeler.

As an educator Murley has held positions at the University of Toronto, York University, Humber College, and as a visiting member of faculty at the Banff School of Fine Arts. He also served as Jazz Area Chair/Coordinator at both U of T (2016-18, 2020-21) and York (2008-11).

In 2022 Murley retired from U of T and is currently focussed on performing, touring nationally and internationally.

His distinctive saxophone recordings have been heard internationally since the eighties with major instrumentals such as ‘Flying Easy’, ‘L.A. Days New York Nights’, and ‘Wings of Glory’. His talents were heard on a Redmond Broadcasting compilation recording with some of Canada’s foremost instrumental performers including David Foster, Liona Boyd, Moe Koffman, Andre Gagnon, and Frank Mills to name only a few. Michael Massaro was thrilled to be included with such a stellar lineup and was humbled when the album was titled after the Massaro hit, ‘Flying Easy’.He has appeared at Sky Dome in Toronto performing the National Anthems of Canada and the United States before various sports events. His multiple appearances in Toronto have included performing as well as being the musical director for several years for the Italian Song Festival held at Ontario Place. Days, New York Nights’a compilation of his best works. He is currently releasing his 5th Album Cd “Love In Motion” which features him on 8 Original tracks and 2 covers “My One And Only Love” and “Stella By Starlight”. Love In Motion – The title and concept is clear “Love” is ultimately the driving forcein all that is good.Michael’s music will touch and inspire the soul of the listener regardless of their age or background. The musicians brought their talent, art and soul to the music… what a great band!!See Reviews on following pages….”Dream Weavers” Review: Canadian sax player, Michael Massaro has the rare knack of presenting a tune that is instantly appealing. A seasoned performer with a style that is both relaxing and compelling, Dream Weavers is laid back and yet energetic with its interplay between the instruments. The 25 second introduction, consisting of guitars, percussion, electric and acoustic pianos set the tone of what’s to come. The strong Gato Barbieri-style melody is at times majestic. Delicate electric piano phrases present an appealing distraction from the theme. The string arrangement is subtle, yet enhances the piece. About half way through this smooth arrangement is a nice guitar cameo. The bass and percussion form a reliable platform for this catchy tune. Right at the end like a fisherman with a salmon at the end of his line, Michael Massaro reels you in with some spectacular sax runs. Dream Weavers has been featured on my programme on many occasion. John Holden. 2BACR FM100.9 http://www.Itunes.com/michaelmassaro“Thank you for sending the CD’S “It Takes Two ” and “Awakening ” I have already played several tracks on my last Jazz Programme. Mr Massaro has done an excellent job with his refreshing new compositions and his arrangements are very well thought out. His playing is quite outstanding, plaintive and with emotion and feeling and the other Musicians do him considerable justice. Two albums of the highest quality and the mixture of tempos and rhythms make for an excellent mix. Full marks to Mr Massaro and all involved with the recordings, as the old saying goes ” class will out “. Best Regards. John Reid. Keith Community Radio 102.8 FM. Keith. Banffshire.
